The link on the website where all the downloads are available only apparently provides a download for the Creative Cloud version. I hand out the link and they come back and tell me it isn't for the standalone.

I will get it reported. The link CMB gives you above will download 5. I will contact the team on Monday and get it fixed. I gave someone that link today, and they reported back that it took them to the Creative Cloud version of Lightroom 5. I've never followed through on the download because I haven't needed it so I have just taken their word for it.
I feel like I'm really in the dark on this. James, there really aren't two versions. If you download Lightroom 5. The only difference is how you validate your license. If you choose to enter a subscription-associated Adobe ID, you have access to Creative Cloud features - which for 5.
If you enter a serial number you will be in the exact same software only you will not have access to Lightroom mobile. Sometimes when you install for the first time or after a long period of time, LIghtroom grants a 7-day trial to the mobile features. At the end, you enter your serial number and away you go. This may be what you are seeing.
Rikk I think, actually I know, there was 2 separate downloads for LR 5. One for the CC version and one as a stand alone. We ran into this problem many times on the Adobe Help forums back when LR 5 was wrapped into the CC system and Users that bought LR 5 before CC as a stand alone product had to use a different download. Yes of course the CC version and the stand alone version of LR 5 are the exact same program but there was, at one time, a separate download for the stand alone version.
Adobe allows anyone to download any of the LR versions from 3 back to 1 but not LR 4 or 5. Yes, I understand all that. However, I have never been caught in this dilemma since I switched over to the Creative Cloud and don't know how to respond to those who are caught in it.
There is something very confusing about the download because they become confused. I will post a link to this discussion and hope it will provide some insight for the user. For those of us who understand how this update process really works it is simple.
But for a lot of users out there who are trying to make sense of the update process it is still extremely confusing. Yes, that is what they want - to force us into the subscription model. It's awful.
